Status Quest
Status Quest · XR4ED · Horizon Europe

Modern mythology you play together.

Status Quest is a mixed-reality game where blind, visually impaired and sighted players explore ancient worlds together. Sound, touch and sight are all valid ways to discover what is hidden.

Two young heroes reach for a glowing mythical artefact amid ancient ruins and spirit creatures.

The project

About Status Quest

Status Quest is a mixed-reality experience made with the blind and visually impaired community. Players with different sensory abilities work together to explore stories drawn from ancient culture and modern myth.

It uses spatial audio, haptic feedback and mobile AR. Sighted players and blind or visually impaired players each contribute something different to every quest.

Status Quest was developed with the German (DBSV) and Italian (UICI) national blind associations over a year of workshops, prototypes and user testing.

The adventure

A myth that happens where you are.

Status Quest turns ancient myths into a mixed-reality adventure. You are a seeker who finds spirits, ruins and lost powers spilling into the real world.

The story

Strange echoes spill from myth into real places: a park, a classroom, a living room. As a seeker, you find spirit traces, solve riddles and keep the human and mythic realms in balance. You meet companions from Greek, Roman and Mediterranean folklore, each with clues and challenges of their own.

How you play

Walk and listen. Spatial audio guides you to hidden artefacts and characters. Sound gets warmer as you get closer.

Touch to understand. Haptic pulses let you scan the shape of a spirit, feel the direction of a clue or confirm an artefact is in reach.

Play together. Sighted players see AR layers. Blind and visually impaired players hear and feel what sight cannot reveal.

Collect and grow. Gather mythical tokens, unlock new spirits and build a story that expands each session.

A short look at Status Quest: the artefacts, the soundscape and the collaborative play that came out of a year of workshops with blind and sighted players.

Designed so that everyone plays the same game.

Spatial audio

3D soundscapes place characters, artefacts and hazards around you. The audio is clear enough to play by ear.

Haptic feedback

Tactile patterns turn the phone into a compass, an artefact or a heartbeat. They were refined through testing with blind players.

Shared quests

Mechanics require blind and sighted players to combine what they perceive. Every player is needed.
